Asher's Rainbow

"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there." -1 Samuel 1:27-28
On January 21, 2015, my world changed. I sat an an exam table, watching my precious son lay eerily still on the ultrasound screen, and heard the words, "I'm sorry. There is no heartbeat." With those six words, my life irreversibly changed. Over the following weeks, my care providers treated me the best they knew how, and the friends and family around me did the best they knew how, but I still often found myself feeling deeply and utterly alone. Confused. In physical pain and emotional anguish, and dealing with additional unintentional hurt from others and not knowing where to turn for help.
That's when I decided that I would make that change. I would be the help, the care, the specialized support for the next mom sitting on the crinkly white paper who hears, "I'm sorry. There is no heartbeat." In my internet searching over the next few months I stumbled across an organization that has now become an enormous part of my life, and that is Stillbirthday. I found that this heart's desire of mine had a name: Bereavement Doula.
As a multi-certified bereavement doula, I am uniquely trained to support families experiencing loss in all trimesters, as well as fatal diagnoses in utero. I understand both personally and professionally the intensity and pain of these situations, and am prepared to support families as they deal with the additional options, situations, and nuances of such births, NICU stays, as well as the aftermath.
If you are currently in need of a bereavement doula, please email me through my contact button. I am available at all hours.
As an SBD doula, I do not ever charge for my bereavement services. I believe it is a service every family needs and deserves, regardless of finances. I believe it is a calling from God to give this gift to the families experiencing such loss, and it is an honor for me to be allowed into this hallowed space in their lives where birth and death meet.
There are, however, inherent costs involved for me as I serve families experiencing loss, such as on-the-spot emergency childcare, keepsakes and physical supplies for the families during those sacred moments with their babies, and commute time and gas mileage often in excess of 60 miles in my surrounding area.
I believe Asher made me his mother to put me on the path to this calling. I believe I was made to hold space for families experiencing loss, and my tiny son showed me that path. I believe my bereavement services are his legacy. If you would like to be involved in that legacy, you are welcome to financially support my bereavement doula services by donating to Asher's Rainbow. Every cent will be used to help support the families I serve during their losses.
